Sweepstakes Fraud
Unless Ed McMahon shows up at your door in person and hands you a million
dollars, you may mostly IGNORE anybody else who calls, emails and otherwise
notifies you that you have won a sweepstakes.
If somebody contacts you and says that you've won a major prize, check for these
two RED FLAGS of FRAUD.
-
Fraudulent sweepstakes always include a sense of
"urgency." They will say that if you do not contact the writer within so
many days or hours, that your prize will be lost.
-
Fraudulent sweepstakes always define a method
that requires you to "give before you receive." They may want you to pay the
"taxes" or the "shipping charges" or any one of a variety of other things.
(If you are that intent on losing your money, you might as well just flush
it down the toilet.)
